Don’t pressure we already lack oxygen
research project
Amidst the seemingly distant research fields:
the influence of Soviet times on the After ’89 generation in Eastern European countries,
natural environments with decreasing oxygen levels and their effect on the evolution of inhabitant species,
the concept of “cold upbringing” — a non-emotional way of raising children,
we sense a sense.(…)
We create diverse compositions, experimenting with audiovisual and choreographic practices.
We dance dialogues to reaffirm the chosen family of friends and allies.
We observe our surroundings in pursuit of serendipities.
We focus on the thingness of things.(…)
Deconstructing fullness, we collect objects of interest and abandon our notebooks.
Drifting away from the rational, we offer time, space, and puzzles.
Taking care of each other, we dream a piece… by piece.
The project is initiated by dance maker BAXI Ostrowski and developed in dialogue with playwright and dramaturg Patrycja Kowańska and molecular biologist Dima Omelchenko.
„Don’t pressure, we already lack oxygen” is an art & science project, based on the concept that each earthling genetically carries the memory of their ancestry. Whether called intergenerational trauma or the serendipity of life-changing events -in our project, we aim to trace the possible lines between generations meeting them with socially, politically and biologically important events. Two-direction perspective: having a look back into the ancestors and imagining possible descendents; is thought to reflect on the way our generation sees their position and how it relates to what before and ahead.
The Soviet era in Eastern European Countries, where the group members come from, has cut the continuity of the families, leaving many without roots. In the contemporary times of intense migration and constant mobility, many also appear as rootless. Same like for the underground root system of trees, the information aboutour family’s past, can nourish our growth. But how do we trace back the place where we are from? And what happens when we meet a gap? ...Empty space ... Blankpage ... What can be extracted from a seemingly blank page? And afterall are the pages of our future blank or we just keep on writing on the same sheet, which has been cleared by time, which has faded - a palimpsest?
